Good Deed Day at University of Derby Students' Union

Posted on 15 Feb 2015

University of Derby Students' Union was one of ten groups to receive a £200 grant to support their Good Deed Day plans. With just over a week until SVW, they tell us more about their plans…

Student Volunteering Week and Good Deed Day are fast approaching, and at The University of Derby Students’ Union, Union Volunteers has been working tirelessly over the past weeks and months to provide some fantastic opportunities for our students!

Thanks to the generous grant awarded to us by the SVW team, Union Volunteers has been supporting our Vice-President for Welfare and Student Rights, Sorcha Haverty, to coordinate the event with First Steps Derbyshire for our Good Deed Day event, Positive Reflections. Since 2004, First Steps Derbyshire has been providing unparalleled support for those with eating disorders, helping them on the road to recovery and is one of our nominated charities for the 2014/15 academic year.

After a short speech from the High Sheriff of Derbyshire, Positive Reflections will aim to engage students through microvolunteering encouraging them to write postcards of support for First Steps Derbyshire’s service users, take part in the #positivereflections social media campaign to raise additional awareness and engage in an arts therapy, taster session. By the end of Good Deed Day, we’re hoping that our microvolunteering activities will have raised the profile of eating disorders but also how students can access support through First Steps.

And that’s just one day!

Union Volunteers prides itself in reaching out to the local community, a focus which is strongly reflected in our SVW 2015 programme of events, a key element of which is the local environment. Liaising with Markeaton Park, our students will have the opportunity to develop their conservation skills in two, give it ago sessions in addition to the chance to make a real visual impact to their local community through a litter pick.

On Saturday the 28th, Union Volunteers is coordinating the Charity Shop Takeover, a social enterprise taster event that will see two teams of student’s takeover two market stalls in Derby’s Market Hall, helping to sell the merchandise of our two adopted stores for the event, Oxfam and The British Heart Foundation.
