'Appreciation to all of our #VoluntHeroes'

Posted on 21 Feb 2017

This Student Volunteering Week, The University of Manchester and University of Manchester Students’ Union have teamed up again to recognise our student volunteers and to encourage those who don’t already volunteer to give it a go!

During the week we’ll be distributing nearly 500 thank you cards and badges to show our appreciation to all of our #VoluntHeroes, which we’ll be tracking on Twitter throughout the week.

We’ll also have a variety of information and taster sessions, so that any student can give volunteering a go and find the right opportunity for them. As always, we’ll be collaborating with a range of different organisations to deliver our Student Volunteering Week activities, including: Manchester City Council, the National Football Museum and local charities.

On Monday we’re opening up one of our regular volunteering opportunities to more students. Every Monday St Cuthbert's RC Church holds a tea dance for older members of the community, so that they can waltz, rumba and cha-cha the afternoon away. Our students help by serving refreshments, chatting to the attendees and, of course, partnering the dancers! This is a great opportunity for students to get involved in a fun, light-hearted event that encourages older members of the community to socialise, exercise and have fun.

Watch out for this caped crusader

Tuesday sees us at the National Football Museum for a volunteer taster session. Students will experience what it’s like to volunteer at the museum, including: investigating the handling tables, a tour of the museum, discussing available roles with existing volunteers, and learning why volunteering is a key part of the National Football Museum.

Our flagship event for the week is on Wednesday, where we'll be taking over an alleyway in Ladybarn, Fallowfield to completely transform it! Working with Manchester City Council and local residents, we’ll be clearing fly-tipped rubbish, removing moss and weeds, and creating planters to completely revamp the space. Look out for some amazing before and after photos!

There’ll also be plenty of information sessions, fundraising events and chances to give volunteering a go.
