Announcing Student Volunteering Week 2018

Posted on 18 Jul 2017

Student Volunteering Week 2018 will take place from 19th – 25th February. Entering its 17th year, Student Volunteering Week aims to empower students to become engaged in civic life. Student Volunteering Week 2018 will be delivered by the Student Volunteering Network (SVN) with support from the National Union of Students (NUS) and Student Hubs.

Student Volunteering Week 2017 saw 60 Colleges, Universities and Students' Unions from all over the UK with over 55,000 students being involved in some level of social action across the week. This ranged from students attending volunteering fairs and signing up to volunteering with local charities, helping renovate local community centres or even volunteering with alpacas.

Francis Wight, Chief Executive Officer at Student Hubs stated ‘'Student Hubs is delighted to be working with SVN and NUS to organise SVW in 2018. Thousands of students make a profound difference in their local communities every year, and SVW is an important celebration of the impact they have. Student Hubs is committed to working with universities, community organisations and national organisations like NUS and the #iwill campaign to support high quality student social action year round.'

Ali Milani, Vice President Union Development at NUS said “Student Volunteering Week is a great celebration of the dedication and impact of student volunteers across the UK and NUS is excited to be involved again this year. We are committed to promoting the student contribution to civic life and encouraging more students to have a go at volunteering and bettering their community and society. As Vice President Union Development at NUS I’m looking forward to working with partners on this campaign.”

The Student Volunteering Network (SVN) is a national organisation which supports staff members who manage student volunteering in both Further and Higher Education institutions. The network aims to:

• Share information and good practice in supporting student volunteering

• Provide regional and national networking opportunities

• Encourage and support the professional development of members

• Celebrate student volunteering and ensure it is recognised by charities, policy makers and the public at large

Membership to SVN is open to any person who manages, is responsible for or supports student volunteering within a FE and HE institution. For more information visit: http://www.studentvolunteeringnetwork.org/

Student Hubs is a registered charity working in partnership with UK higher education institutions.

We believe that when students are supported to tackle social challenges, learn about issues and connect with each other, both communities and students benefit. Student social action creates positive change now and in the future, enhancing communities and equipping young people to become active citizens for life.

Student Hubs was founded by a group of Oxford students in 2007 and now supports over 2000 students to take part in high quality social action each year.
